Fan Expo 2010 09/05/2010
It's been a week since Fan Expo came to an end and I'm still wired. I find myself smiling at strangers on the street like I would smile at people from my table and treating each leisure clay session as "hurry up and finish" task. I'm stuck in expo mode. The show was great and I've even signed up again for next years with a better idea of what to bring in 2011. My table was a little more complete looking this time around but man what a pain lugging those displays around! The part I loved most had to be the people. Everyone there was so extremely kind. The energy some of them came with is likely what I'm still carrying with me a week later so if any of you are reading this then thank you!! your comments and support go SO much further than you can even imagine. I got to sit between a stempunk author and an illustrator of really cool looking sketchy goth styled art. I also got to meet some new vendors as well as see a few of the familiar ones. I now own these two prints from Monika of faebylart Her and her husband were both crazy nice (and good looking to boot). I even met briefly with monster kookies, another polymer clayist of oddities and even super briefer with fashion whore. I got a little over excited when I saw this bright and pretty gal wearing my mutant cupcake... well her mutant cupcake. If you own a pink brain cameo and have a super cool grandma I wish I got your pic too <3 Now that Fan Expo is all over I'm currently getting ready for "Dia De Los Muertos Festival of the Arts" (and burlesque show). I painted my first sugar skull last night and can't wait to make more. 1 Comment Spolight on Star Foreman 08/01/2010
I was browsing around Etsy when I found this photo of what looks like a graceful swimmer/roller skater posing in front of a turquoise background. The style was modern yet dated at the same time, instantly gaining my click. Star Foreman is the talent behind the lens snapping stills of some of the most beautiful and fitting models. The combination of setting, style and pose are brilliantly brought together in a seamlessly perfect way. There's this distinctive mix of classic movie star themes which could easily be linked to the city of Los Angeles where Star currently resides. Smoking chick (row 1, column 1) is now on my list of to own's. Such a glamorous, almost Marylin like shot <3 http://www.starforeman.com Newest Issue of Creepy Queen Magazine <3 07/30/2010
Some time ago I received a message from the ever so awesome creepy queen magazine. They were putting together their next issue and I was asked if I wanted to fill out an interview for them... ah, fuck ya!! Created by KimmiKillZombie of UvKITTY (also in Toronto), Creepy Queen is still a fairly new publication. It's latest and second issue is out now and is available through www.creepyqueen.com. The cover, inspiring to say the least. I'm not sure what my interview page looks like but I'm patiently waiting for the copy I just ordered to arrive. stooooked! Still Drooling 07/27/2010
I was recently asked by a customer to make a brain cameo the same colour as a pair of shows. When I opened the link to see the heels I was instantly hypnotized by... wait for it....here it comes...this is just filler now... zombies!!! They are easily the most beautiful shoes I have ever seen. Once I was done making the cameo I shifted gears and made some peanut butter and jelly necklaces but it wasn't enough. The shoes were still on my laptop screen and since I can't quite afford the heels I needed to do something to honor them (besides drooling like an undead). I can honestly say I feel better for making this set of bff heart brains. Do the colours remind anyone else of candy and ghostbusters? Tentacles not Testicles 07/18/2010
Creating tentacles can be a tedious job. Luckily the anticipation of seeing the end result is enough of a driving force to finish them... The octopus above will be available to purchase later this week but I don't yet know about any loose limbs. I'll be making larger versions of them shortly, their purpose being purely decorative, not worn. Anyone attending fanexpo in Toronto this year will get the chance to see them up close. Or hold them. Pet them. Cradle them... even smell them if you'd like. Er, just no biting allowed Finding Inspiration 07/13/2010
Heat Alert warnings in Toronto had me cooking in my tiny death box of an apartment so about a week ago I decided to bow out. I packed up my clay and headed to my parents place for some AC, whipped cream and sound sleep. Since I first got here I've collected dozens of reference photos including these carnation poppies, Bizarre, awkward and alien like they were an instant attraction sparking a few different variations. This is the only one so far that has made it through the entire process. These things were in no way sculpted for retail. Instead they'll be a part of a couple top-secret-until-their-release-date-unless-you-sign-up-for-my-newsletter projects WTF is this thing?! 07/04/2010
I've been crazy busy these last couple weeks... somehow without much to show for it (balls to that). The one night I did get a chance to sit down and make something new from polymer clay, this guy was born. I call him oatmeal. Hes only been through the first two stages of creation but when hes fully complete he'll be one disgusting little human worm thing. Auxiliary Shoot 06/10/2010
Auxiliary Magazines June/July issue was released this month and in it a couple of punked out Toronto boys wearing my clay jewelry. Look at this one! ...glaaa, doesn't he just have the perdiest plumpy lips? yes he do The spread also features handmade items from a handful of other Toronto artists. This stylist has some real stellar ideas and I nearly jumped outta my skin when she mentioned this shoot. A part of me is kind of sad its all done with now... The other part's still grinning at the outcome. ![]() It's my first blog post on the new dot-com and I'm super stoked! My aim is to make this place my new hub. I don't expect to be abandoning my social networking sites any time soon but I already have the feeling like this ones my baby (probably because I spent most of yesterday making it). It'll be nice to have a place to share all the non-polymer clay creations and other random goings on that happen to be caught in a photo. I'm already loving it here <3 | Beat Black is a handmade jewelry (and other stuff) business created by myself, Sarah Norton, and run out of my apartment in downtown Toronto.
I've worked with a variety of different mediums over the years but during these last few its been all about polymer clay. I mostly try to use this blog to showcase the craft in a 'behind the scenes' kind of way. I also like to show off other artists original work that inspires as well as listing any giveaways and discounts. If there's anything in particular you'd like to see here I'm completely open to your suggestions and welcome the email April 2012 |
