Spotted, Ugly Cupcake Necklace around Melissa McCarthys neck in the movie Spy... But how did it get there? In early 2014 I was asked about re-making more of these hideous cupcake necklaces for a movie. I can just imagine someone typing "ugly necklace" into a search engine and being bombarded with the possibilities. Among them was a picture of the ugly cupcake necklace I sold back in 2010. Even tho I had just closed up shop days prior to the email (I had some wickedly sore hands), I couldn't say no to the possibility of seeing one in film... I slowly created five more of these necklaces and shipped them off to Budapest. At the time I had no idea what kind of movie they might be in. I cheated a little and checked many reviews before seeing Spy. I pretty much knew how the necklace was going to be introduced and in what context. What I didn't know was how much it was going to be seen throughout the film. It was a really cool surprise to see a few close ups on the cupcake and the part it played in the storyline. Ugly Cupcake Necklace makes its first appearance at 0:13 seconds
Now I only wonder what the original owner would think if she were to all of a sudden see her necklace in this way without any warning... it makes me giggle. All in all Spy was a funny movie. I've always been a fan of Melissa McCarthys comedy and the way she can take what could have been an inflated piece of humor and ground it so well. She certainly delivered as Susan Cooper. Details on the new line of strange clothing and jewelry will be posted on the facebook fanpage as they emerge. Quite a while ago the option of choosing your own colours for your jewelry was introduced along with a colourwheel of possibilities. Since then you've kept me busy with all sorts of custom coloured pieces, mostly brains, some cupcakes and the odd spreads for the pb and j sets. It's especially nice to make something in a new colour for the first time <3 This lavender (#1 on the colourwheel) spiders web cameo was one such custom order made for Sabina. Shes both the model and makeup artist in this set of alternative photos. Makeup by Sabina along with Tara O Photos put together these gems and I'm stoked to have them be a part of the first in-listing customizable posting. This spiders web necklace is a bit of an experiment and the first step in making custom coloured pieces even easier to order. All the colours are now listed by number in the drop down menu above the "add to cart" button. Just choose your favorite and your cameo will be created and sent out just as you've ordered it. More customizable listings coming soon ...
Sea life, insects and big eyes came together in this newest polymer clay figure. I made this one as a gift to fzito for his birthday. It had to be a unique piece of art, something that would only ever be sculpted once. The pointy claw limbs and creepy worm body were both borrowed from the flying curdle worm I made last year. Other than that it just seemed to make itself up, looking only slightly like the sculpture I had sketched out in the start. After this shrump got its last coat of glaze, the only thing left to do was the icing for the ghostbusters stay puft marshmallow man cake created with a limp and a set of really strong arms... I think I better stick to polymer clay

As a bonus and for a limited time only, you can save over 30% on a peanut butter and jelly best friends necklace set when purchased from this site: I've struggled for years trying to create a black heart that would be the right logo for Beat Black. It's something I've been especially particular about and so far this is the closet I've come. Here is the polymer clay version of my sketches I wanted a logo that would incorporate my tag of "where the sweet and sour co-mingle", as well as the black heart. I don't think I would have come up wit this on my own so I'd like to give credit where credit is due. Thanks to the craft show go-ers who either saw tentacles in this beat black necklace or suggested the design, Cynthia Moustache-Bacon Gregg who had this to say on my facebook page: "It would be awesome if you could make a heart necklace with tentacles coming out it, or something like that." and Bunny X Productions who created the inspiration for the tentacle on this pumper. As a side note, Canada Posts already sky high shipping costs have just gone up again. I know it stinks, that's why from January 15th-25th you can take 15% off your order with the code "STINKY" in my etsy shop ... it still stinks

Beat Black is a handmade jewelry (and other stuff) business created by myself, Sarah Norton, and run out of my apartment in downtown Toronto.
I've worked with a variety of different mediums over the years but during these last few its been all about polymer clay. I mostly try to use this blog to showcase the craft in a 'behind the scenes' kind of way. I also like to show off other artists original work that inspires as well as listing any giveaways and discounts.
