a secret obsession, turned silly confession

Since I first started this polymer clay thingy I've been drawn to the colour yellow. I don't make many yellow items but I use it all the time when mixing hues. There's just some unexplainable draw to it that has me making bananas (weird I know)... My name is Sarah Norton and I'm a bananaholic.
Picture
Most of the nanners I make don't get cooked (cause really, how many bananas does one girl need??), only mixed back into a batch of clay. I guess in a bizarre way that means there are bananas in most of the pieces I've sold - I hope no one's allergic. I did cook a handful of em though,
This latest one I made especially for Francesco Zito. When he asked "why did you make me a banana?" I didn't even try to fake a sane answer, what would that even be? I don't know why I do it but upon closer inspection I see I'm not the only banana nut out there. I pulled these ones from etsy. Like the stuff I make they're all handmade from polymer clay. Clicking on them will bring you to their listings

It's Not Coal

Ack!, So I broke my three year streak and burnt $100 worth of goods in the oven the other day. The things were smoking so they had to be released on the patio while I aired the toxic fumes out of the house.
Picture
By the time I was ready to bring them back in i had to do a little hunting. They were covered in about a foot of snow but underneath they looked like the same, pissed off, burnt, puffy, little evil coals... minus the smoke. On the tray are two Peanut Butter and Jelly sets and one I Heart Brains BFF set (could have been much worse)
Picture
At first I thought I just pressed broil instead of bake on the digital oven but upon closer investigation I found out something a little different. My question now is...

why in the eff would someone change their oven from fahrenheit to celsius before leaving on a trip without telling their clay cooking daughter who happens to be watching their house while they're goooone?!?!
I'm now on day 3 of my new not burning anything streak

Surprise Surprise, Puppy Surprise

Over the years I've made all sorts of versions of the same idea. These polymer clay cupcakes, hearts and brains are only a small representation of the lot from 2007 til now.
Picture
Sometimes before I've sold all of one version the design has already evolved leaving behind a series of pieces without homes. Although this collection has been thinned out from the discount trays at Toronto shows, there is still quite a bit I would love to send out.

Having a soft spot for surprises myself I am stoked to present these super discounted surprise boxes, each of which contain at least 6 random items.
Picture
...Not entirely off topic but does anyone else remember these? if you do its best not to play it unless you like having the song stuck in your head
I got 5 cause my parents cheated ^_^

And The Winners Are...

It's been 5 days since the close of the giveaway and today is the day to find out who gets to take home the grand prize. Since we had over 200 entries there will also be two more winners of $25 certificates for Beat Black.

Lucky for me weebly.com (my site host) gave the option of exporting all the data collected onto a spreadsheet. From there I was able to copy all of your email address' into the secure random.org and simply click a button to let it chose these 3 lucky folks. here we go...

Winner of the $50 gift certificate to Beat Black is:

Second winner of a $25 gift certificate is:

All winners have been informed though their provided email address along with further details as how to claim their polymer clay goodies.

After the information from the survey was tallied and repeats deleted there was a grand total of 235 entries. Of those;

-nearly all of you ticked the necklace box when asked how you prefer to own your polymer clay creations

-many of you are interested in seeing more food with faces. Roughly the same amount would prefer less faces and more Gothic items

-one very helpful person suggested that I update the shop section of this website with all items, their prices and their availability. I will most definitely be starting this before the new year thanks to you :)

-a handful of people had lots to say in very well laid out and clear sentences only to surprise me by apologizing because English is not their first language

-the most commented on topic was the design of the pieces themselves. I really appreciate the kind words and encouragement I read

I am very thankful for the people who took the time to lay down their words and opinion on my work. After reading some of the lengthier critiques my first instinct was to send a response on your feedback but of course this can be spammy. If indeed any of you would like to hear back you can send me an email on my contact page and I will track down your words and be happy to oblige. (to my surprise) Weebly.com has saved all the survey information in a secure area so I'll be able to access it whenever I need to.

Thank You all again and Congrats to Keira, Jeorgia and Tracy!!

Fan Expo 2010

9/5/2010

It's been a week since Fan Expo came to an end and I'm still wired. I find myself smiling at strangers on the street like I would smile at people from my table and treating each leisure clay session as "hurry up and finish" task. I'm stuck in expo mode.

The show was great and I've even signed up again for next years with a better idea of what to bring in 2011. My table was a little more complete looking this time around but man what a pain lugging those displays around!
Picture
The part I loved most had to be the people. Everyone there was so extremely kind. The energy some of them came with is likely what I'm still carrying with me a week later so if any of you are reading this then thank you!! your comments and support go SO much further than you can even imagine.

I got to sit between a stempunk author and an illustrator of really cool looking sketchy goth styled art. I also got to meet some new vendors as well as see a few of the familiar ones. I now own these two prints from Monika of faebylart
Picture
Her and her husband were both crazy nice (and good looking to boot). I even met briefly with monster kookies, another polymer clayist of oddities and even super briefer with fashion whore. I got a little over excited when I saw this
Picture
bright and pretty gal wearing my mutant cupcake... well her mutant cupcake. If you own a pink brain cameo and have a super cool grandma I wish I got your pic too <3

Now that Fan Expo is all over I'm currently getting ready for "Dia De Los Muertos Festival of the Arts" (and burlesque show). I painted my first sugar skull last night and can't wait to make more.

Spolight on Star Foreman

8/1/2010

I was browsing around Etsy when I found this photo of what looks like a graceful swimmer/roller skater posing in front of a turquoise background. The style was modern yet dated at the same time, instantly gaining my click.
Picture
Star Foreman is the talent behind the lens snapping stills of  some of the most beautiful and fitting models. The combination of setting, style and pose are brilliantly brought together in a seamlessly perfect way.
There's this distinctive mix of classic movie star themes which could easily be linked to the city of Los Angeles where Star currently resides.  Smoking chick (row 1, column 1) is now on my list of to own's.  Such a glamorous, almost Marylin like shot <3

    Sarah Norton
Beat Black is a handmade jewelry (and other stuff) business created by myself, Sarah Norton, and run out of my apartment in downtown Toronto.

I've worked with a variety of different mediums over the years but during these last few its been all about polymer clay. I mostly try to use this blog to showcase the craft in a 'behind the scenes' kind of way. I also like to show off other artists original work that inspires as well as listing any giveaways and discounts.
